Bee Buffer Project: Protecting the honeybees that pollinate and produce
The Problem
Bees play an essential role in the production of one-third of our food supply. Their existence is essential for our own, and sadly, they are in danger of going extinct. Since the 1990’s, the world has experienced an unprecedented amount of bee die off. In 2013 alone, the United States lost one-third of its entire bee population. Scientists are not entirely sure why this is happening although they do have some suspected culprits: parasites, pollution, climate change, and pesticides.
The Solution
The U.S. Bee Buffer Project aims to create a network of concerned citizens dedicated to creating Bee Buffer Zones, small plots of land saturated with nectar and honey. These zones can then help promote the health and fertility of bees. Because beekeepers struggle to find foraging areas to feed their bees, the Bee Buffer Project hopes to grow a planned network of dedicated buffers who will support the bee industry and safeguard the bees in honey bee forage habitats.
