The Problem

An epidemic of fake news, disinformation, misinformation, and opinion masquerading as fact has fed a deepening distrust in news outlets and online media generally. The rise of social media has only made things worse, by creating ideological echo chambers where people interact mainly with friends who share their views, and by making all news seem equal — blurring the distinction between sites that do not uphold high journalistic standards and more credible, legitimate sources.

The Solution

Describing their technology as “the anti-personalization news algorithm,” Nupinion aims to fight fake news and combat ideological echo chambers, empowering users to easily find relevant information and compare perspectives on important issues. How? By summarizing and grouping relevant news by topic, and showing source credibility and political slant (right-wing, left-wing and centrist positions on the same issue), encouraging readers to recognize bias in coverage and challenge their own beliefs. Currently a public beta running on limited sources with limited features, Nupinion hopes people will support their efforts so they can remain free, with no ads and independent from special interests.
