Plants-4-Hunger

Supports vegan food and farming programs for impoverished children in Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, and the U.S. Donation will be matched.

The Problem

Our Plants-4-Hunger program addresses the problem of providing direct hunger relief, especially to children/students in low-income countries and communities. Traditional hunger relief programs rely on the use of animals, usually shipping either live or already processed animals across many countries. The use of animals for food undermines global food security as livestock consume more food than they produce (in calories and protein). They also contribute to desertification, deforestation, water waste, pollution, and climate change (all of which undermine hunger relief efforts). The United Nations concluded that “Livestock are one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems. Urgent action is required to remedy the situation.” By supporting plant-based food and farming systems, impoverished communities do not spend scarce resources providing food, water, shelter, and medical care to farmed animals. Plant-based food and farming also addresses problems around unnecessary animal suffering. By supporting small organizations doing work in their own community, our Plants-4-Hunger program addresses problems that occur when well-meaning charities implement their own models, which may be contextually inappropriate or displacing of local workers. Our model directly empowers the local community. As A Well-Fed World sends ALL funds received directly to the groups, we address the problem of organizations who spend large amounts on overhead and/or fundraising. Furthermore, we are able to use our general funds to match particular donations so that recipients actually receive 200% of the donated amount.

The Solution

A Well-Fed World's Plants-4-Hunger allows people to feed impoverished and undernourished children without harming animals or damaging their local eco-systems (as happens with some "animal-gifting" programs). The Plants-4-Hunger program supports four small organizations personally chosen by our team for their proven successes and ability to leverage small donations for large impact. These groups work within their own communities (we do not impose our model). Their programs can be replicated and include farming and income-generating components for increased sustainability. By feeding children and developing stronger school lunch programs in some of the world's poorest regions, we enable students to learn more and become better equipped to make a positive long-term difference in their communities, their countries, and the world. We also demonstrate the health and prosperity that can be had from plant-based food and farming. We demonstrate that the foods that best feed people are the same foods (and systems) that are best for the environment and animals.
