The Problem

The destruction of healthy forest systems has proven to be detrimental not only to land and wildlife, but also to the livelihoods of those who depend on the the land for survival. Trees affect everything— they provide habitats for animals, they purify water sources, they control flooding and help lessen the effects of other natural disasters, and they help to replenish the soil with nutrients needed for farming. When farmers can’t grow crops, their farms fail, and their families are often displaced. This leads to a devastating cycle of poverty and further deforestation.

The Solution

Eden Reforestation Projects works in several nations around the world to return control over threatened forests back to the local communities. Our method begins by hiring local villagers to plant trees—this gives the villagers a decent income that allows them to provide for their families again. Through their work, the villagers develop a greater love and understanding of their forests and the environment, inspiring them to not only plant more trees but also protect the restored forest.

As the reforestation effort goes on, healthy forests begin to emerge, and the negative effects of deforestation begin to disappear.

The forests continue to grow with high regeneration rates, wildlife that once fled start to return to their natural habitats, and the land and nearby water sources begin to heal and take on their original beauty.

Eden Reforestation Projects plants over 3.5 million trees each month and has planted just over 210 million trees since its conception. With every dollar donated to the cause, 10 trees are planted and one work day is created for a village employee. Eden is currently planting trees and saving lives in Madagascar, Nepal, Haiti, and Indonesia, with even more project nations on the horizon!
