The Problem

The world's sea turtles are struggling to survive — largely due to human action. Turtles are sought by poachers for their eggs and meat; stripped of their shells by black market traders; captured accidentally by commercial fishermen, resulting in death or injury; sickened or killed by plastic pollution; deprived of their habitat by coastal development. And these are just some of the many human-made threats that have driven sea turtles to the brink of extinction.

The Solution

The mission of Sea Turtle Conservancy is to ensure the survival of sea turtles within the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific through research, education, training, advocacy and protection of the natural habitats upon which they depend. Over the course of nearly 60 years, Sea Turtle Conservancy’s research programs have yielded much of what is now known about sea turtles and the threats they face, and the organization is applying this knowledge to carry out the world’s most successful sea turtle protection and recovery programs.
