Girls Write Now: Helping underserved girls discover the power of writing
Girls Write Now: Helping underserved girls discover the power of writing
The Problem
Inner-city students, and particularly young women, are confronted with numerous obstacles to academic success. Victims of systemic inequity related to race and income, they struggle to progress, growing frustrated and discouraged, often leaving school, their significant abilities and creative talents untapped.
The Solution
Girls Write Now is a program that pairs professional writers with underserved, high school girls. The professional writers help to inspire the students to hone their writing craft and find their voice by tapping into their lived experiences. Girls Write Now has been recognized by the White House as one of the nation's top after school programs. In the next ten years, Girls Write Now aims to double the number of students served, integrate more with college readiness, and strengthen its alumni services.
