Spark MicroGrants: Moving past male dominated decision making in East Africa
Spark MicroGrants: Moving past male dominated decision making in East Africa
The Problem
Men hold disproportionately large amounts of power and influence over populations in East Africa. Power and decisions must be democratized to include women in order to represent the best interests of the full citizenry of a village.
The Solution
Spark facilitates a six month village planning process paired with a seed grant of $8,000 for a village project. The weekly facilitated meetings are open to all citizens & garner widespread participation, on average over half of a village's families are represented. 56% of participants are women and 40% of naturally elected leaders are women. We take a community-based approach where women and men work together & appreciate what both bring to the table. The result is stronger female participation & leadership as well as stronger household decision making where women & men make decisions together about household finances.
