ICAAD: Justice for Women & Girls from Gender Violence in the Pacific

Perpetrators of gender-based violence in the Pacific are often given reduced sentences for their crimes because of gender stereotypes and cultural norms. ICAAD is working to educate judges and advocates to better protect women and girls by eliminating gender bias in their decision making.

The Problem

In the Pacific, over 60% of women and children face domestic violence and sexual assault. Gender violence is perpetuated by patriarchal beliefs that devalue women. The violence is then legitimized, condoned, or denied by the community and institutions. Gender based violence is the most extreme form of sexism and misogyny, and it must be stopped.

The Solution

ICAAD aims to combat all forms of gender violence by attacking the patriarchal norms that fuel gender discrimination. ICAAD is seeking to bring about legal reform both at a policy and individual level. At the policy level, ICAAD is seeking to change the policies that safeguard perpetrators from being held accountable for domestic violence and sexual assault. At a personal level, ICAAD is working to change the attitudes and behaviors of judges and prosecutors through evidence, data, and training.
