Safe Delivery App: A mobile app empowering skilled birth attendants to provide safer births for women everywhere
Every woman has the right to receive quality health care during pregnancy and childbirth. The Safe Delivery App – developed by Maternity Foundation, Copenhagen University and University of Southern Denmark – is a smartphone application that provides skilled birth attendants with direct and instant access to clinical guidelines on Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care. The Safe Delivery App is designed for low resource settings and is a tool to ensure that more women receive skilled health care to prevent and manage complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
The Problem
Every day, 800 women die from complications in pregnancies or childbirth and every year, around 3 million newborns die within first 28 days of life. 90% of maternal deaths and 50% of newborn deaths could be prevented with access to skilled care during pregnancy and childbirth.
The Solution
The Safe Delivery App was developed to strengthen maternal healthcare by providing life-saving information and guidance to handle emergencies in pregnancy and childbirth even in the most remote settings. The App contains easy to understand animated instruction videos, action cards, drug list and practical procedure instructions. All features and functions are designed for low-literacy, low-income settings and work offline once downloaded. It can be used as training tool and as an instructive aid in emergencies. Your support will go directly to our project in Benin, West Africa where we work with our on-the-ground partner, the Danish NGO BØRNEfonden, to reduce one of the highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the world. Funds raised will go directly towards training midwives on how to use the Safe Delivery App to save the lives of women and babies when emergencies occur during pregnancy and childbirth.
